Leaks and dropouts

First off, there is the "scandal" that a few leadership camps have leaked membership lists to the Globe and Mail to use in polling. Some bloggers find it unacceptable and will not be voting for any of those that did. Others think there may be some privacy concerns about it. Me? I think as long as they made the G+M and any polling firm sign a non-disclosure agreement about the info then there shouldn't be any real trouble. Maybe fine the camps, but I honestly don't see a big deal about this issue.

However, signing up dead people and paying for memberships is a different story. Especially after the scandals earlier in the campaign. I think we all hope that Volpe does the right move and withdraws himself from the race. He has to realize he has no chance to win, and that he really won't have that much support. At least bowing out tomorrow would allow us (and the media) to concentrate on all these other wonderful candidates in the race next weekend.

I just got phone blasted by a recorded Ignatieff message. The campaign obviously provided the lists with myname on it to a company that offers this service.

Providing that same sort of information to do a poll i sno different than getting a call centre to do a phone canvass or "voice drop".

I do not understand why anyone cares about this. Who's privacy has been violated? Who?

Fraud is different than a reputable polling firm using lists. If they had been paid to do the polling by the campaign teams, it would have been fine. Just because the globe wanted it done, and paid for it, people think its a problem. Its not really a problem and it's not fraud. It's normal to use memberships lists for polling. How were all the previous polls of Liberal members done.

NO one has ever given a polling company (especially a tory one) the liberal membership list.
The data use agreement called for each campaign to seek written permission from the party prior to giving the list to any commercial company. This was not done.

I think "neo conservative" better look back at the Conservative campaign - you know a certain Quebec Conservative candidate that had lots of "dead people" memberships.

Those who live in glass houses.....

I receive recorded phone messages from other candidates (Brison,Dryden) (not Ignatieff) - 1 candidate twice (Dryden).

I am bombarded with emails from the Rae and Kennedy camp.

I'm sick of this race already!
